The Chelsea Football Club is coming back from the Manchester United’s pitch with the draw (1-1), on Sunday. Didier Drogba, who was on the Chelsea’s line up for the first time this season, despite of D. Costa and L. Remy’s injuries, scored the only goal for the Blues. Chelsea remains the only undefeated team in the Premier League.
There was no let-off, though, as Drogba escaped his marker – who mystifyingly was the diminutive Rafael – and headed in off Van Persie at the near post. The striker’s attempted headed clearance was flimsy at best (53′). The Ivorian scored his first goal in Premier League, since he was back at Chelsea this summer, two years after he left for China, and after Galatasaray. Despite his old age (36 years old), Didier Drogba is still a very good striker, as if he was 20. Indeed, it was his second goal of the week, after his penalty against Maribor in Champion’s League, Tuesday. Last time Drogba scored in Premier League was in March 2012, against Stoke City.
Mostly, Drogba enjoys such popularity rating, because he is an icon for the Chelsea’s supporters. He made sparkling days at Chelsea from 2004 till 2012 (with 157 goals): for instance, he scored the only goal against Barcelona in Champion’s League semi-final in 2012, and in the final on 19 May 2012, Drogba scored the equaliser from Juan Mata’s corner in the 88th minute, taking Chelsea into extra time and then penalties. He also scored the winning penalty in the 4–3 penalty-shootout that led Chelsea to the victory over Bayern Munich. In November 2012 Drogba was named Chelsea’s greatest ever player in a poll of 20,000 fans conducted by Chelsea Magazine.
Thanks to his performances, he was a hero for his London supporters and even more so for his coach, José Mourinho, with whom he spend a lot of time in Chelsea, between 2004 and 2007. After the game, the “Special One” came back on his striker’s performance : “At the age of 36, he’s in his best behavior than ever to be a key-man. The young players who arrived in the club after he left, like Oscar, Willian and Hazard, understand the place of this player in the club. Sometimes, I called him the King myself “.
Indeed, we can say “the King” is back. But Diego Costa, and secondly Loic Rémy, are the mains strikers. Let’s hope, that Didier Drogba will avoid injuries, and will find his place on the Chelsea’s front, to strike again, and continue to make the CFC’s history.
