What a match, what a finish, what a guy! Benoit Paire defeated Gael Monfils yesterday at the BNP PARIBAS MASTERS in Paris. The Frenchman, who was behind by one set and two breaks in the second set, ended up winning the match in three sets 2/6 7/6 6/4. This match reflects in a certain way Benoit Paire’s season : he started it at the 149th position of the ATP Rank. After this tournament he will compulsory integrate the TOP 20.

After 45 minutes, the score was without appeal : 6/2 4/0 for Gael Monfils and all the public whistled Benoit Paire blaming him for his lack of fighting spirit. Then, the 23rd player of the ATP woke up and chained 5 games in a row to win the second set in the tie break (9/7). The third set was a festival of beautiful points on behalf of Paire: flights volleys, drop shots, the Frenchman brought out all his artillery to finally win the third set 6/4 and qualify for the 2nd round of the Masters. After the match, Paire couldn’t hold back his tears: “It was very complicated. Even during the match, I like Gaël very much, he’s someone I respect very much, and I felt at the beginning, I felt very sorry that I wasn’t playing well.  I had a good season. I felt it was too bad I was ending the season that way, so I tried to stay in that match, and I was able to turn it over.”

He will play tonight against another Frenchman, the seed n°14 of the tournament, Gilles Simon, in night session. It’s another style of tennis which awaits Paire tonight, but he is the French player who is in the best form among all his countrymen and has all the weapons to beat Simon. He could count on the support of the beautiful singer Shy’m who has been his partner for several months. And above all he can rely on a public whom he knew how to reconquer after the episode of 2013 when he had gone out under the whistles of the Bercy Stadium.
