It’s such a rare thing : a terrorist has been arrested, alive. That allowed politicians to give their minds on the issue of how we should punish terrorists. The least we can say is that Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, (called “NKM” in her own country), has a strong opinion on the subject.
Six days after the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, three days after the Brussels attacks, the question of punishment for terrorists appears. For the right-wing politician, “There is no solution today to guarantee that men like Salah Abdeslam will effectively spend the rest of their lives in jail”. Even Manuel Valls, the French prime minister, declared himself open to discuss possibility of adopting new laws in those cases.
However, the real life imprisonment that NKM asks for has already been voted by the national Assembly, just a few days ago (on the 8th of March of this year). Adopted by the majority, the 4th article gives the possibility to overpass, for terrorists, the maximal penalty, that is 30 years of jail. The text now needs the agreement of the Senate.
