Another failure for Amelie Mauresmo and her teammates in the Fed Cup Sunday. The captain decided to quit the head of the French tenniswomen team after being defeated by the Czech Republic, once again.
Sadness, regrets, disillusion. Too many words to illustrate the feeling of the French team after the final round lost against the undefeatable Czech team. The Rhenus of Starsbourg hosted Sunday, the final round of the Fed Cup, the equivalent of the Davis Cup for women. The French team, which did a great job until the finals, had to face the Czech Republic, unbeatable for three consecutive years. Saturday, both teams faced each other in two different games and ended the day with a draw 1-1.
The French and Czech team played against each other on Sunday in two simple games: Caroline Garcia, number one of the French team defeated her opponent Karolina Pliskova in 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3. The French tenniswoman played a great tennis but the game was tough and the audience of Strasbourg had to wait until the third set to see their favorite player take the lead and win the game, 2-1. The second game opposed Alize Cornet to Barbora Strycova, which the Czech tenniswoman won in two sets 6-2, 7-6; allowing her team a comeback on the score board, once again. Ending on 2-2 after four games, the title will be played in this last and decisive game. Garcia and Mladenovic for France were facing Pliskova and Strycova for Czech Republic, the final round was taking an ideal turn for the French team and their hopes of winning were growing. However, the two tenniswomen weren’t able to handle the pressure and were rapidly overwhelmed by the strong game of the Czech duo. It ended with another defeat in two sets 7-5, 7-5. The Czechs have now been dominating the Fed Cup for three consecutive years.
This lost final also ended with the resignation of Amelie Mauresmo, leader and captain of the French Team since 2005. Former world class number one, she decided to quit her position because, pregnant, she wouldn’t be able to lead the French team once again in 2017. France won the Fed Cup twice, in 1997 and in 2003, when Mauresmo was playing. Even if she did not bring the cup back home, she ended her career with a great assesment reaching the final round opposing the favorites of the competition in a last decisive game.
