Lionel Messi will have the final word about his contract renewal. For the past few days, tensions prevail between the football player and Barcelona, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca.

Messi had the possibility of renewing his contract last summer but he decided to take his time to think about it. On July 6th, “La Pulga” and his father have been sentenced to 21 months of imprisonment for tax fraud. Ever since this decision, he has managed to be careful about his future and not rushing into things.

Furthermore Messi has a lot of options. His current contract will be over in July 2018 but he has many issues to consider. First of all: his comeback to Argentina. Messi has never hidden his wish to go back to his training club, the Newell’s Old Boys. He is today 29 and the end of his career is close. The temptation to play for another European club is quite possible. Manchester City for instance could be a serious contender in Messi’s next choice. The presence of his former coach, Pep Guardiola, in the Citizens could be an important criterion.

However, Barcelona has not yet said its last word. The president Josep Maria Bartolomeu doesn’t want to be remembered as the officer who let Messi leave. “I don’t know what will happen in the future but of course we will always try to explain to him that he is at the best club in the world and this is the best place for him to live and he is living the best experience of his life with us,” Bartolomeu said in an interview.
